Middling moaning England

Late last night I watched on TV a guy who was trying to find out what is Middle England and where is it. I was intrigued as to why this guy was so interested to pursue this term of phrase.
He managed to slip in the fact that he'd gained a B in GCSE Geography which gave him the boost to cut out from a map of the UK all the places he didn't think were Middle England ie: all cities, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall and Devon for the hell of it. He spoke to a Social Professor and was taken around suburbs of somewhere and shown the twitching net curtains of suburbia. He pottered along to a book group in Norfolk because that's what he guessed at Middle Englanders do. They weren't happy with the label and certainly didn't want to be seen as intellects. Then he pottered on to a golf course where one guy interviewed said he was proud to be Tory besides the fact he likes blue and that golf clubs do stop all from entering. He then went on about too many people are entering our country. Sorry but at this point I hufffed at the telly. Then the pinnacle of this guy's intrepid journey into Middle England took him to Jilly Cooper's home (writer of Riders and lots of other romantic fiction involving things heaving in haystacks). In her suming up of Middle Englanders she felt they are afraid of change, like things just so and shop for art at Harrods.

Is that because they like the posh looking Harrods bags the paintings come in and they can pick it up alongwith a designer handbag and suit or they can't face the hassel of going around art galleries with all those pretentious looking people. My mind slightly boggles as I feel i'm anti snob here but I go to these places like Harrods, Waitrose and M&S maybe the lack of a range rover and golf membership keeps me out of the Middle England set, which I'm happy about but wouldn't mind more money to spend in those places i've mentioned, so am I seeking a middle England existence??? yikes on a 4 wheel trike

So all in all the guy's quest was bit vague like this post :>)

I think I know where Middle England is, it's the wine asle of Waitrose, Cirencester... see you there. Wouldn't it be more fun to find Middle Earth and Hobbiton?

Always interesting to learn about details you've never heard of... Sounds like the labels that get put on differnent regions of this country also: deep south, midwest, west coast, east coast, etc.

I suppose you cannot avoid it. Soem folks will always find such things fascinating and somehow necessary. Oh, and I like those Harrod's bags too! ;)
