'Some murderers are serving too long in jail, meaning prisons will become "full of geriatric lifers", Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips has said.
My suggestion for growing numbers in prison is build more prisons- isn't that logical?- Phillips has declared there are too many geriatric lifers doing time and taking up valuable space- so his solution is to cut down on the number of years for life sentences!!! I can't believe my ears- this gives those with murderous intents the green light to commit crimes ever more so as they can be lead to believe that they won't have to do time for as long. The crims don't seem to be dettered as it is and know that life doesn't necessarily mean life anymore.
Talking with my dad on this recently he said back in the 50's/ 60's and 70's people tended to respect Police more and know if they were going down for a murderous crime, they were going down for a long time.

That does seem wrong to just make the sentences shorter--- Hopefully they wil come to their senses before that happens!!
I don't think that space should be a reason for shorter sentences, but I'm completely in favour of prison reform and shorter sentences anyhow.
